Review #87 – Urban Kitchen

A festive spirit calls for a festive brew. The blokes were ready and rearing to find their next holy brail (brew-grail) in the hallowed grounds of Balcatta. The pick of the day was Urban Kitchen. Although the brew wasn’t entirely up to scratch, the love and friendship of the blokes was what really mattered most.

Vibes 🍃- UK operates right in the industrial realm of Balcatta and maintains that chic and industrial décor. The table and chair seating were plentiful, and the staff were very accommodating, but it didn’t feel like a café. No music, no food menu and really lacked the vibe you associate with your favourite local. Saying that, customers got on very well with the baristas… The blokes have just got to be part of the community!

Taste 👅- Today we indulged in a traditional blend from Darkstar that we have tried in our crusade before. Brazilian/PNG composed that was deep bodied and super rich. Unfortunately, the beans seemed a bit old and/or over-extracted on the day so it was tough to get many notes besides dark chocolate.

Temperature 🌡- Some discrepancies with our LM temps: one good, one not so much, even one with some icy froth. Inconsistency is the Bane of perfection.

Glass Size 📏 – The ‘Blokes Equation’: Transparent glass + 6oz = happy blokes

Froth 🥛 - Little on the frothy side... nay, very frothy.

General Appearance/Consistency 🤩 – A couple good ol’ swirly milk designs and inconsistency with temp/froth… such is urban life.

A quaint little spot in the heart of Balcatta. Ah Urban Kitchen really got our industrial juices flowing. A very nice community feel at the good ol’ UK. The personal connection between these guys and their customers was noticeable and admirable. Their coffee wasn’t ideal, beans were a tad aged, milk was very frothy and lacked in the heat department, but hey, we do respect the effort - cafe-ing isn’t easy!

58.6/100 on the Brew ‘o’ Meter! 🤖🤝
